The same day, as your region reads it

A Tamil calendar, a Kalnirnay and a Telugu panchangam do not print the same things. Each edition follows its own region: month names, era, festivals and the timings people there actually look for.

How this panchang is made

Questions people ask

What is a panchang?

The Hindu almanac. It gives five limbs for every day — tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon’s star), yoga and karana — worked out from the positions of the Sun and Moon, plus the times of day that are good or to be avoided. Families use it to fix fasts, festivals, pujas and the start of new work.

Why do the timings change from city to city?

Every timing counts from local sunrise and sunset. Today sunrise is 5:29 AM in Kolkata but 6:29 AM in Mumbai, so Rahu Kaal, choghadiya and muhurtas move with it. Always choose your own city.

Why does each language show different timings?

Because each region prints its panchang differently. Hindi and Gujarati panchangs lead with Choghadiya, Bhadra and Panchak; Marathi calendars follow the Kalnirnay style with the Shaka year and samvatsara; Telugu and Kannada panchangams give Durmuhurtam, Varjyam and Amrit Kalam; Tamil calendars give the Tamil date, Nalla Neram and Gowri Panchangam. Month names and new-year days also follow each state’s tradition.

How accurate is it?

Sun and Moon positions are checked against NASA JPL’s DE440 ephemeris: sunrise and sunset agree within seconds, tithi and nakshatra end times within a minute. Festival and vrat dates are computed by rule and checked against published regional panchangs. Where panchangs follow different conventions, the methodology says which one we use.

Can I see the panchang for another date?

Yes. Tap the date at the top of any page to pick a day — the page changes as soon as you choose — or use the arrows for the previous and next day.
